Explosive sensing with insect-based biorobots

Overview

Saha et al. utilize the biological olfactory system of locus insects to develop a bio-robotic chemical sensing system. Implantation of electrodes in the olfactory regions of the locus brain enable detection of neural responses to different explosive vapours. By assessing recorded neural signals, they enable robust detection of explosive chemical species and effectively demonstrate the feasibility of insect-based bio-robotic chemical sensing systems for the recognition of explosives.
